LOOKOUT

Why mobile threat prevention is a top business priority

19th June 2019

The proliferation of malware

As mobile specialists delivering secure solutions, the Appurity team recently attended Lookout’s EMEA Partner Summit in Barcelona.

The summit focused on the proliferation of malware and the urgency of mobile threat prevention as a key requirement for all organisations.

Phishing for facts:

  • Lookout determined that the rate at which mobile users tap phishing links has increased by 85% year on year since 2011
  • 85% of phishing attacks via mobile devices take place outside email
  • 50% of mobile apps will be progressive web apps (PWA) by 2020, so there’s also a growing number of non-app threats to contend with.

“More recently, Lookout discovered ‘BeiTaAd’. This well-obfuscated plugin was found in 238 unique applications in Google Play. BeiTaAd forcibly displays ads on the user’s lock screen so mobile devices become almost unusable.”

The rise of App attacks

Clearly, the steep rise in the number of phishing attacks now happening outside email is due to the increasing popularity of apps as a communication tool. But while many organisations have filtering in place to block email-based attacks, far fewer have protection in place for other entry points.

Phishing in the media

Major breaches caused by malware are being reported at an alarming rate. For instance, there was last month’s WhatsApp breach, which we covered in our previous blog.

More recently, Lookout discovered ‘BeiTaAd’. This well-obfuscated plugin was found in 238 unique applications in Google Play. BeiTaAd forcibly displays ads on the user’s lock screen so mobile devices become almost unusable.

Mobile threat defence isn’t an option – it’s a must-have

With an ever-increasing number of threats on iOS apps, new networks such as 5G being introduced, and gig economy workers using multiple devices, the time for threat prevention is now.

Safeguarding your mobile workforce is essential. Things like password-less authentication are no longer futuristic concepts. They’re important threat prevention measures that your organisation must implement today.

Multiple deployment needs add complexity

Most organisations have multiple deployment needs. This adds further complexity when it comes to threat defence. You may have multiple enterprise mobility management (EMM) and mobile application management strategies to deliver. In addition, your employees may be using their own devices.

Lookout post-perimeter security

The good news is, Lookout’s app analysis technology can help you to protect your mobile workforce from phishing attacks. This innovative solution is powered by intelligence from over 40 million iOS and Android apps.

Appurity can help you to deploy Lookout as part of a secure mobile infrastructure. It’s all about helping your organisation to gain visibility into the entire spectrum of mobile risk and applying policies to measurably reduce that risk.
